Series 6 Ethical and Professional Standards

Suitability, ethics, AML, privacy, insider trading, and conflict rules tested on the Series 6 exam.

This chapter is where Series 6 shifts from product knowledge to professional judgment. The exam is not satisfied with knowing what a mutual fund or variable annuity is. It also tests whether you can sell, recommend, communicate, and service those products without crossing ethical, supervisory, or customer-protection lines.

The right way to study this chapter is to think in terms of preventable firm mistakes. Many questions here are really asking which action creates avoidable customer harm, compliance exposure, or disclosure failure. If you approach the chapter with that lens, the rules become more coherent and much easier to remember.

SectionMain issue it coversBetter exam instinct
FINRA ethicsBaseline standards of fair dealing and professional conductAsk what a responsible representative should do before asking what is technically allowed
SuitabilityMatching the product and recommendation to the customerProduct knowledge is not enough without customer fit
Unethical business practicesSales abuses, misstatements, and improper conductWatch for language that pressures, misleads, or hides material facts
Anti-money launderingDetection, escalation, and documentation of suspicious activityThe representative escalates red flags rather than investigating alone
Insider trading and confidentialityUse and protection of material nonpublic informationDo not confuse client privacy with MNPI controls
Customer privacyProtection and permitted sharing of customer informationThe exam often tests whether disclosure is allowed or restricted
Conflicts of interestCompensation, incentives, and role conflictsIdentify the conflict first, then the disclosure or control response

Read this chapter as a conduct filter. If an answer undermines fairness, disclosure, customer fit, or control discipline, it is usually the wrong answer even if it sounds commercially convenient.
